Overview

SELECT Training’s CAP® (Certified Administrative Professional) Exam Preparation Course aims to provide the delegates with an overview and understanding of the benefits of earning and maintaining this certification, its requirements and exam format. The course will explore the content of the CAP Body of Knowledge and strategies to help them pass the exam.

Objectives

  • Gain an overview of the IAAP – CAP® (Certified Administrative Professional), the benefits of earning the CAP® credentials and eligibility requirements
  • Identify core resources that would help delegates prepare further for the exam
  • Explore the CAP BOK (Body of Knowledge), its domains and performance outcomes amount, and what percentage of content is covered on the exam
  • Understand the first domain of the CAP Body of Knowledge – Organisational Communication and its performance outcomes:
  • Describe the concepts and applications of communication, management and leadership models / theories within organisations
  • Describe the process of effective interaction with internal and external stakeholders of an organisation.
  • Recognize the importance and utilisation of professional networking
  • Demonstrate an understanding of team dynamics within organisations
  • Describe the positive and negative types of interpersonal interactions existing within an organisation
  • Demonstrate knowledge in the techniques of creating and giving presentations
  • Demonstrate the ability to conduct business with diverse cultures
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge in organisational structure, systems and strategies including their role in productivity and effective management
  • Describe how confidentiality, legality and ethics are important for the functioning of an organisation

Day One

Introduction to IAAP – CAP® (Certified Administrative Professional)

  • The six domains of the CAPBOK (Body of Knowledge)
  • Key resources list
PO 1: Describe the concepts and applications of communication, management and leadership models / theories within organisations.
  • Identify the various types of communication (written, verbal, nonverbal, interpersonal, group, public) and which is the most effective for different business situations
  • Describe management / leadership theories and how they relate to effective organisational communication
PO 2: Describe the process of effective interaction with internal and external stakeholders of an organisation.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge and proficiency in managing and resolving conflict within an organisation
PO 3: Recognise the importance and utilisation of professional networking.
  • Describe how networking (both in-person and virtual) has changed the way people find jobs and companies recruit new employees

Day Two

PO 4: Demonstrate an understanding of team dynamics within organisations.
  • Identify the different types of teams and describe their purpose
  • Describe the specific kinds of dynamics within teams and how they can be managed
  • Demonstrate knowledge in effective decision making, communication and team building
PO 5: Describe the positive and negative types of interpersonal interactions existing within an organisation.
  • Explain how human motivation affects organisational dynamics
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the differences between managing and leading
  • Explain the dynamics of mentorship and coaching, including the effect on performance
PO 6: Demonstrate knowledge in the techniques of creating and giving presentations.
  • Describe how to apply methods of coping with communication anxiety
  • Identify the different types of presentations and appropriate usage of each
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how to prepare for and deliver a presentation

Day Three

PO 7: Demonstrate the ability to conduct business with diverse cultures.
  • Describe international business practices with regard to cultural norms and rituals
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of multicultural communication in today’s workplace
PO 8: Demonstrate a basic knowledge in organisational structure, systems, and strategies including their role in productivity and effective management.
  • Describe the parts of a strategic plan and how it affects organisation performance
  • Define various organisation management systems that examine productivity (such as Six Sigma and TQM)
PO 9: Describe how confidentiality, legality, and ethics are important for the functioning of an organisation.
  • Understand basic employer and employees’ rights with regard to legality

METHODOLOGY OF TRAINING

1. Certification eligibility
  • No college degree – 4 years of relevant work experience is required
  • Associate degree – 3 years of relevant work experience is required
  • Bachelors’ degree – 2 years of relevant work experience is required
2. Exam overview
  • A written 300-multiple-choice format
  • Approximately 3½ hours to complete
  • Delivered via assessment system’s approved computerised testing centres
  • Based on the CAP Body of Knowledge
3. Re-certification requirements
  • Three-year recertification cycle
  • Maintain professional development points through:
